If a measure of a program’s success are its results, then I can’t possibly thank the staff of the West Michigan Cardiology Wellness Program enough. The program’s 3-prong approach to addressing heart disease is simple and practical enough for any patient to follow. The core foundation based upon a belief of “progress not perfection” in living a life with regular exercise, a heart healthy diet, and a strong mental attitude offers patients a chance to apply learnings to everyday life. While some may argue the program can be rationalize away as common sense, my own 6-week session presented a setting that yielded person accountability and changed behaviors. Nearly halfway through the course, I am already realizing the physical benefits of weight loss improved reading in glucose and blood pressure, and walking upstairs is much easier. IT was also helpful to be surrounded by patients who share similar experiences and challenges. And while our heart disease were all varying levels, their own stories were also motivation in itself to do better. I am fortunate that my wife was able to accompany me during the education elements of the program: it served to make for a team approach at home when applying better habits can be challenging. Thank you Sara, Nicole, and Derek for the work that you do. Your contributions are meaningful and complement doctor visits and medication!
